Toilet Installation

Let’s face it we all spend a decent amount of the toilet also known as the throne. If its leaking or wobbling when you sit down that can be a scary thought…we don’t need to go into detail. Let’s not waste any more time, if you need a new throne let me at Handyman Kitchener fix this potentially smelly problem.

So the first step is we need to uninstall the old toilet and dispose of it and clean any debris in the area where the new toilet is going to be installed. Once the old model is out it’s a good idea to stuff an old rag in the soil pipe to prevent sewer gas from coming through into the house and to prevent any hardware that we will use for the toilet from falling in (definitely don’t want to be putting your hand down there)

Next we will look at the existing toilet flange to see if it’s still in good condition. If it is cracked or broken then we will need to replace it with a matching flange.

Once the old toilet is removed and we know the flange is in good condition, we can move on to the toilet seal. Another word for this is wax ring. A popular way to install this, is to place the seal in position on the flange before lowering the toilet bowl into place.

A side note: if you have installed a thicker tile in your bathroom after installing the old toilet, we may need a thinker seal or wax ring.

Let me help you complete your To-Do List!

Time to lower the toilet onto the flange also aligning it with the bolts. It’s important to not tilt the toilet after setting it as this could break the seal and cause leaking! Next is to tighten the bolts, but no too tight as it will crack the porcelain bowl.

If you are installing a one-piece toilet then this next step is not necessary. If you have a two-piece toilet then the next step is to install the tank. We lower the tank onto the bowl, align the bolts and then tighten the bolts. Next we have to reattach the supply line to the fill valve at the bottom of the tank and then attach that to the supply valve that’s coming out of the wall or floor.

The last step is to choose the toilet seat and lid and install it. There are multiple different kinds of seats: Elongated toilet seats, round seats, and heated toilet seats. Elongated seats are the most popular but round toilet seats are good if you live in a small home or apartment. Its important to find the right size seat for your toilet.

Now that the toilet and seat are installed, you should test you’re the plumbing on the toilet. Slowly turn on the water shut off valve, let the tank fill and flush the toilet. Watch the base of the toilet and the point at where the bowl and tank connect. You can add and leak-detecting dye to make any leaks more noticeable.
