Small Drywall Hole Repair

For holes that are smaller than 4 inches consist of just a few steps. The first step is to cover the hole with a self-adhesive mesh patch and then use a lightweight joint compound over the patched-up hole. Next step is to let the compound dry, this could take up to 24 hours and then apply a second coat if needed. Then sand the area down to make it smooth followed by wall paint.

Large Drywall Hole Repair

With a small hole you can simply patch up the hole, with a large hole larger than 4 inches it isn’t as simple. The first step is to cut out a hole one inch above and below the hole and length wise until you hit the studs. This is so the new drywall piece will have support.

Next, we need to cut a small piece of wood to support the new piece of drywall. This can be a 1x3 piece of wood or ¾ inch piece of plywood and it should be about 2 inches longer than the hole you are fixing. Fasten the wood with drywall screws.

Now it’s time to cut out a piece of drywall to fit into the hole. It should be snug but not too snug where you end up damaging the existing drywall. Next is to fasten the new drywall with drywall screws into the studs and the new support piece of wood we installed earlier. While drilling the screws to the new support it’s important to go about an inch from the ends of the drywall to avoid cracking and splitting the drywall.

We can now use self-adhesive fiber-glass tape around the edges of the new drywall, then using a drywall knife we can spread drywall joint compound across the repaired drywall and tape to create a nice smooth finish. Let it dry, sand it so it is smoother then repeat with a second coat. Wipe the repaired area with a tack cloth before repainting the wall.

There you have it! A nice repaired wall that you don’t have to try and hide from you visitors. I understand that doing drywall repair can be a tricky job in you lack the tools or experience, give me a call at Handyman Kitchener 226-243-6859 to give you a helping hand!
