Interior/Exterior Door Installation

For most rooms in your home, you most likely have a door to go with it! There are many different styles of doors whether you are installing an interior, exterior, closet or patio door. If you’re looking to replace a damaged door or looking to replace them all for a fresh look upgrade. Give me a call at Handyman Kitchener 226-243-6859

Exterior Doors

When selecting a new door, you have to pay attention to detail! Make sure to measure the rough opening and you also need to the handedness (which way the door opens) When these steps are ignored, it leads to big problems!

Next we test fit the exterior door, we have to use a level with the combination of shims to make sure the door is centered and plumb. If not done correctly, the door won’t open properly.

After making sure the door will fit properly, trace the molding, vinyl or metal siding you will want to use around the door, then remove the door from the opening. Cut the drip edge to fit the width of the rough opening.

Once you are confident with fit of the door proceed to apply several thick beads of silicone chalk to the bottom of the doorsill. With the exterior door in the rough opening, go ahead and make sure it is center and push the molding tight with the sheathing.

If the door jam on the hinge side is not plumb then use the shims I mentioned earlier to make it plumb then temporarily use some screws to hold the hinge jam in place. Now we need to go inside and insert the shims around the door frame to stabilize the jamb. Cedar shims are preferred because they are weather-resistant.

The next couple steps involve installing the hinges, removing the retaining brackets, taking out the temporary screws we used earlier and installing the anchor screws, and anchoring the moulding with galvanized nails every 12 inches

The final steps involve applying paintable caulk around the door frame and use weather stripping where applicable, cutting the shims so they are flush with the framing and finally installing your new door lock and door knob.

Just like that you have new exterior doors and new curb appeal that everyone can see! This job does require a few different tools and very detailed measuring, if you have any worries about doing it yourself, don’t worry give me a call at 226-243-6859 and lets step up a time!

Interior Doors

When talking about interior doors, there are 2 main types: a prehung door and a slab door. The slab door is less expensive but does not come with any frame. The prehung door comes with the frame attached. Already having the frame cuts down on the amount of time it takes to install the door, which in my opinion is the worth the extra money.

If you are going to be installing a new prehung door, first thing is you need to remove the old door and frame. Trying to be careful and not damaging the wall or frame is important. If you want to paint or repair the wall doing it before installing the new door is a good idea.

Next it’s time to begin the installation process. Make sure you have the right size door and the right handedness before going any further. Using a level and shims make sure the door is straight and the jamb is plumb.

When the door is level and plumb, use some finishing nails into the frame and shims into studs. Next is installing the trim around the door. This is done by using finishing nails through the trim into the studs in the wall. Score the extra trim with a knife and break it off.

The final steps involve installing the door knobs, backplate and adding the strike plate and the door locks.

With a couple steps you now a have a new interior door that isn’t banged up and something you aren’t embarrassed about your guests seeing. An interior door is easier than an exterior door but still involves precise measuring, using tools and possibly needing an extra pair of hands. Give me a call at 226-243-6859 and let me help you out!
