At Handyman Kitchener I specialize in doing laminate flooring and vinyl sheet flooring. Both options look great, faster to install and don’t break the bank!

Vinyl Sheet Flooring Intro

Vinyl sheet flooring has many advantages! Let’s get in to some of them. Because of new technology, vinyl can now have a very realistic look and texture of stone and wood grain patterns. Some people can even have a hard time telling the difference sometimes. Vinyl sheets are often times used in kitchens and bathrooms because they not only look good but have good resistance to moisture.

Maintenance right after install

After you get your vinyl flooring installed, it’s a good idea to protect all the seemed areas and to not walk on the seam sealer. Keep the room at 68° F

(20° C) or greater at least 2-3 days. This allows the adhesives to properly setup. Another tip to make sure the adhesives is to make sure you don’t put any heavy weight the vinyl floor so there is no chance the adhesives compress which could be permeant. Also don’t thoroughly wash your vinyl for 5 days to make sure the vinyl cures

Protection

When moving heavy furniture place a sheet good (plywood, underlayment) underneath to spread the weight and also make sure all your furniture has felt pads underneath.

Daily Maintenance

For spills wipe up immediately with a clean cloth and use a “self-cleaning” cleaner. Normally the manufacturer will recommend a cleaner. Avoid using an abrasive cleaner or brush because they will scratch and damage your vinyl flooring!

As for dirt, sweeping and vacuuming will do the trick. Be careful of the vacuums with a beater bar because it will scratch your flooring. Another good trick is to have mats at all your entry doors to prevent the dirt from even reaching your flooring.

If you notice anything wrong with your vinyl flooring, like a seam opening up or you notice a gouge missing make sure to give me a call at 226-243-6859

Vinyl Flooring Installation

Okay that you know how to take care of vinyl flooring, let me explain how I install it! The first step is to prepare the surface that the vinyl will be installed on. If being installed on to wood normally a underlayment will be used, if on concrete there will be testing on the moisture levels. The height of your appliances and cabinets will be needed if underlayment is required.

You might be wondering can I get new vinyl flooring installed over my old vinyl flooring? In some cases that is possible but that will be determined upon inspection. Ripping up and disposing of your old flooring or carpet can be a time-consuming task. We can discuss the cost and methods to remove it.

There are 3 methods to install vinyl flooring and they all depend on the style and manufacturer: Full Spread, Floating, and Perimeter Adhered.

Full Spread: Adhesive is troweled over the entire substrate (area).

Floating: Not bonded to the substrate with any adhesive.

Perimeter Adhered: Adhesive is only applied to the perimeter of the flooring and also at the seams.

Before the installation process begins, all the furniture must be moved.

Next is the subflooring. Your existing subflooring might be suitable for the vinyl flooring or you might need new subflooring installed prior. It is important that the subflooring is clean and level.

All of this might seem overwhelming for you and that’s okay! It’s a big job. let me help you with it and give that old room some new life with some vinyl flooring!

Laminate Flooring Intro

Laminate is a great option for your home! Theses floors have improved a lot over the years. The technology involved help the laminate flooring simulate the looks of natural stone, hardwood, and ceramic tile. Laminate is great for homeowners who want that look of a natural stone or real hardwood without the heavy cost. As for tile you can get the amazing look of tile without worrying about cracking or grout cleaning! Lastly laminate flooring is great for busy households that have kids or a busy job because this flooring is very low maintenance.

Maintenance and Protection

Life is busy let’s face it, we’ve all been there walking through your house with your dirty shoes on whether you’re rushing to get to work or maybe your kids don’t believe in taking their shoes off. No matter what it is, let’s go over how to keep your floors clean!

Tools are as simple as a broom, mop, and vacuum. Just make sure your vacuum doesn’t have a beater bar as it can damage the flooring. When using a mop make sure to use a clean dry cloth afterwards so that the water isn’t sitting on the laminate flooring for too long. Another simple way is to put doormats at all entry doors to stop the dirt from even reaching farther into your home.

Make sure not to use any abrasive cleaning products. The manufacturer should have a list of recommended products that are safe to use.

While moving furniture make sure to have gliders on the bottom of your furniture or pick them up to avoid scratching. Another way is to put a small piece of carpet under the legs to help them slide.

Laminate Flooring Installation

Alright let’s get to the exciting part! Getting that laminate laid down. First all the furniture will have to be moved out of the room. If the old flooring or carpet is getting torn up that needs to happen the day prior. If you need help with this, we can discuss it add that fee into the job.

Next, I will be looking at the subfloor for any major imperfections like big gaps or ridges. Then the underlayment will be installed over the subfloor. This allows for the flooring to expand and contract with the temperature, also provides a moisture and sound barrier!

After these steps it’s time to lay down your new laminate flooring!

After installation there could be some dust and odours, having good ventilation for 2-3 days is a good idea.

Adding laminate flooring to a room can really add some new life to it! Not going to lie it is a lot of work and should be left to someone who has experience. Let me take this job off your hands and give me a call at 226-243-6859.
